GAGAUZIAN AUTHORITIES CONCERNED ABOUT GOVERNMENT'S DECISIONS TO LIQUIDATE VULCANESTI COURT AND TO REASSIGN COMRAT COURT OF APPEALS

A working meeting of the Bashkan of Gagauzia, deputies of the People's Assembly, members of the Executive Committee with mayors, chairmen and counselors of local councils, as well as representatives of the Council of Elders of Gagauzia was held in Comrat on Friday.

Bashkan Evghenia Gutul announced on her telegram channel that they also discussed the justice reform, "which the central authorities are carrying out without taking into account the special legal status of Gagauzia."

"The court of first instance in Vulcanesti is under threat - they want to reassign it to neighboring Cahul. Plans to merge the Comrat and Cahul Chambers of Appeal have also been voiced," she recalled, considering them "as another step of the central authorities to destroy Gagauzia."

According to the bashkan, "PAS party and President Sandu are consistently taking away the rights and powers of the autonomy."

"The deputies of the ruling party faction are already openly voicing their goals - to turn Gagauzia into an 'ordinary district with ethno-cultural peculiarities'." The defense of the special legal status is our common task. The executive, legislative and local authorities of Gagauzia, as well as our entire society must unite so that we can pass on a strong and self-sufficient Gagauzia to our children," Gutul concluded.

The meeting was held behind closed doors. Representatives of the press were asked to leave the room at the beginning of the session, despite the protests of journalists.
