SUPPORTERS OF THE BASKAN OF GAGAUZIA PROTESTED OUTSIDE THE BUIUCANI COURT, DEMANDING “STRICT ADHERENCE TO THE LAW”

About a hundred supporters of Gagauz Baskan Evghenia Gutul protested on Tuesday outside the capital's Buiucani sector court, where preliminary hearings of the criminal case against Gutul were to begin.

As INFOTAG reports, the demonstrators, brought from Comrat, demanded that the judges “strictly follow the letter and spirit of the law.” They held placards “Stop political repression!”, “For freedom of speech and thought!”, “Let's not let the baskan offend!”, “We are free people!” and chanted “Victory!”.

Gutul, who addressed the protesters, said that the criminal case pending against her is “fabricated and not supported by anything.”

“We will prove our innocence, behind us is the truth, the law, the people and respect, Say no to the iniquities of Maia Sandu and PAS. Behind us is the people with their respect and love. I have always worked and will always work for the interests of Gagauzia,” said the head of the autonomy, who is accused of ‘receiving illegal financing from a criminal group’.

Member of Parliament Vadim Fotescu expressed the opinion that “the case is being considered against the background of the upcoming presidential elections, the results of which Maia Sandu intends to stay in power at any cost”.

The court session never took place. It was postponed until the end of May.
