POLITICAL SCIENTIST ANATOL TARANU BELIEVES THAT NEW LAW ON GAGAUZIA STATUS IS NEEDED AND SHOULD BE ADOPTED BY REFERENDUM

Political scientist Anatol Taranu believes that a new law on the status of the Gagauz autonomy is needed and should be adopted in a referendum. He said this during the program "New Week with Anatolie Golea" on TV8 channel.

"The current law on the status of ATU Gagauzia was adopted in 1994. It is no secret that it was adopted under certain circumstances, under pressure from Russia. At that time it seemed acceptable, many people welcomed such a solution to the conflict that arose in the south of Moldova. Time has shown that the law is far from perfect. Now we are facing problems that are caused by this law, among others," Taranu believes.

Speaking about the imperfections, he mentioned first of all "the right to self-determination of Gagauzia in case Moldova loses its statehood."

"How is this 'self-determination' possible! In case of Moldova's unification with Romania! Let's assume that such a unification will happen. And in this case, inside the territory of the country, without external borders, there will be "self-determination" of the territory of three districts, which are subsidized and have no chance to survive independently?! This is nonsense, which was then imposed by Russia," the expert said.

According to him, the provision of the law that the Bashkan of Gagauzia automatically becomes a member of the government was also a mistake.

"All over the world, governments are the political emanation of the will of citizens: the elected parliament forms the government. How can the current bashkan of Gagauzia, who openly supports Russia's aggression against Ukraine and travels to Moscow for meetings, represent the pro-Europ5esian government of Moldova!," Taranu wondered.

He cited the exclusion from the government of the Chisinau mayor, who until 2007 also automatically became a member of the government.

"This was possible as long as there were no political contradictions between the government and the Chisinau mayor's office. And when, under the Communist government, the elections in Chisinau were won by the Liberal Party mayor, the law was changed and he was excluded from the government," the political analyst recalled.

He considers that the solution to the problems could be a new law on the status of Gagauzia.

"It should be elaborated taking into account the mistakes made, as well as the opinions of the parties and the recommendations of experts," Taranu emphasized.
